In case you missed it―From my November E=mc2 newsletter...
BUENOS DIAS, MIS AMIGOS. Welcome to the final E=mc2 newsletter of this 20-year prison sentence(!) I can hear Dad’s old Tony Orlando record playing in my head as I type this. “I’m coming home, I’ve done my time...” Has anything noteworthy happened while I was away? Besides, you know, the regular stuff like Capitol riots (or peaceful sightseeing tours, if you prefer), hallucinating AI, SpaceX, self-driving vehicles, a global pandemic, Trump 2.0, and the mayoral election of Zohran Mamdani. The world looks pretty crazy through my cell bars. Crazy and a little scary, to be honest. But nothing we can’t handle. You can be sure that I’ll be right here attempting to make sense of it all in this same newsletter at least once a month. And probably singing about it at Pensacola Unplugged. And podcasting about it. Even though I’m not really sure what a podcast is—the pod part, specifically. I do know that it’s noisy and crowded in that sphere, but I’m looking forward to adding my voice to the cacophony. Books, music, sports, politics, and reform. We’ll see where it goes. Is anyone out there dedicated to truth-seeking anymore? Or is it all Tucker Carlson on “testicular tanning to increase testosterone” and normalizing hate? When a lifelong prisoner with a GED feels compelled to be the voice of reason, you know things are getting sideways. But I doubt political commentary, no matter how clear-eyed and committed to decency, is going to make anyone feel better about the world. Or inspire them. Music, however, is another story. And if there’s one thing I’m excited about sharing with you guys, it’s the music. I’ve written 2 albums worth of original material over the last couple years, plus I’ve learned the songs of my heroes, the music that has kept me company over the last couple decades. Music is really just another medium for storytelling. (Can’t wait to tell these stories with a Gibson ES-335 in my lap!) Before I get into this month’s essay [in my next post “Six Pages”], I want to thank everyone who has subscribed to this newsletter over the years and wrote reviews on Amazon and spread the word about my books. Life is about to get really good. I’m looking forward to sharing the next chapter with you. Momentum. ―IV
